Have Negative Bias?


What is wrong with negative thinking? Does negative thinking hinder our success? How can we know our negative bias? In this episode, our guest Helen shared how her negative bias gave her a boring life, and after she changed her thinking to positive thinking, she started to REALLY enjoy living.

1. We All Have Negative Bias!

Each of us has a negative bias! We may not think we do, but we do. You may be thinking what a negative bias is. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negativity_bias it is “The negativity bias,[1] also known as the negativity effect, is the notion that even when of equal intensity, things of a more negative nature (e.g. unpleasant thoughts, emotions, or social interactions; harmful/traumatic events) have a greater effect on one’s psychological state and processes than neutral or positive things.”

Helen said her main negative bias was not thinking she could do much because of her chronic illness.

There are many examples of what is negative bias, and here are a few of them.

  • Thinking another person will harm us when there is no way to know this as a fact.
  • Thinking we cannot do something before they even try, and when there is no reason for our thinking.
  • Thinking something else is the reason for failure when there is no other justifiable reason for our failure.
  • Thinking others are better than us because of something that happened a long time ago in our lives.
  • Thinking that there is the only way to do something when there are one or more ways to do something.

As we can see, there are many areas in our lives where we can have a negative bias. Also, we can see that negative bias thinking outweighs positive thinking.

2. Ready to See Reality

Often it takes years to see we have one or more negative biases. For each person, the reason we are not willing to see our negative bias will be different. Also, for each person, the thing that forces them to see their negative bias reality will be different.

Helen was forced to see the reality of her negative bias when she almost died because of her chronic illness.

The consequences of a negative bias can be very harmful. The key is to be willing to open ourselves up to the reality of our situation. This will take us to be humble and not prideful.

3. Your Negative Bias Is?

After being ready to hear our negative bias reality, we need to identify them by asking probing questions.

Helen uses a notebook to write down her thoughts, and then she asks probing questions about her thoughts. This helps her see her negative bias.

What is your negative bias? Take time right now to reflect on your areas in your life where you may have a negative bias, and then write down what you discovered. To do this, write a thought on a piece of paper, notebook, journal, et.

4. Negative Bias Bad?

Since we all have a negative bias, the question is do they affect our lives. The answer is yes! They are hindering us from succeeding.

Helen said the effect of negative bias was a boring life.

How has negative bias affected your life? To see this, write next to each of the negative biases you wrote down how they are not helping you succeed.

5. Negative to Positive

Now that we know how our negative bias is hindering us from succeeding, it’s time to change them. The question is, how can we change from negative thinking to positive thinking.

Helen shared steps on how to change, which are the following.

  • Step 1: Identify the Bias Issue.
  • Step 2: Don’t Let It Define You
  • Step 3: Know Your Purpose.
  • Step 4: Believe It’ll Happen
  • Step 5: Take Baby Steps

After knowing we have a negative bias, we need to follow these steps, and often we try to solve our challenges ourselves. The great news is that we don’t need to try to change all by ourselves. We can have a support base to help us overcome Negative Bias.

Helen found help to deal with her negative bias. The help she found gave her the tools to solve her challenge, and now she is helping others overcome their negative bias challenges.

There are many ways we can find help to change our negative bias, which could be having a counselor, telling our support group, or following a book’s action plan. The key is that we are working at conquering our negative bias, so we can be successful.
